Polysystem theory, developed in the 1970s by the Israeli scholar Itamar Even-Zohar, has had a profound influence on translation studies, moving it forward into a less prescriptive observation of translation within its different contexts. The polysystem is conceived as a heterogeneous, hierarchized conglomerate of systems which interact to bring about an ongoing, dynamic process of evolution within the polysystem as a whole. Even-Zohar focuses on the relations between all the systems in the polysystem. He emphasizes that translated literature operates as a system in the way the TL select works for translation and in the way translation norms, behavior and policies are influenced by other co-systems.
