A total of 84 primary school children(from Grade Two,Grade Three and Grade Four) both with mathematics learning difficulties and with normal mathematics learning abilities have been selected in this research, which,by means of the digital line estimation task, aims to probe into the development of and the difference in the numerical estimation competence of the two kinds of children. The results show the following:(1) The children from Grade Two show a significantly lower accuracy in the fulfillment of the digital line estimation task than those from Grade Three and Grade Four.(2) The children with mathematics learning difficulties demonstrate a significantly lower accuracy in the fulfillment of the digital line estimation task than those with normal mathematics learning abilities.(3) The children from Grade Two with mathematics learning difficulties perform the digital line estimation task by using an exponential and linear representation, whereas those children from Grade Three and Grade Four accomplish the task merely by means of a linear representation.
