The Tax Inspector is Peter Carey's most controversial novel in that it touches upon the darkest side of modern Australian national image — corruption and incest.All that Maria Takis,the tax inspector,saw and heard indicates that Australia is confronted with serious social,family and spiritual problems.It is pointed out that,during the process of moving from the periphery to the center,the bourgeois are likely to lose their way and become degenerated in human nature,while their inner world is full of struggles between justice and evil,kindness and vice.Meanwhile,their yearning for transformation and redemption is indistinct but discernible.
