Historical evolution of minority and immigrant language policy in America

目前,美国大约有270多个民族、使用着200多种语言。在美国历史上,政府对少数民族及移民的语言政策在不同的历史时期并不相同:南北战争之前,对英语以外的其他语言采取不干涉政策;种族隔离时期采取的是"英语唯一合法"政策;民权运动以后则是英语和其他少数民族语言合法共存的政策。

At present,with probably more than 270 nationalities,the USA is using 200 kinds of languages.In the American history,the government has adopted different language policies to national minority and immigrants in the different historical periods Before the Civil War,it adopted the policy of not interrupting the languages other than English.In the racial segregation Period,it adopted the ＂English Only＂Policy.After the civil rights movement,it adopted the policy of legitimate coesistence of English and other minority languages.
