During the Anti-Japanese War, Zhejiang University had been forced to move westward to Guizhou province's Zunyi, Meitan, Yongxing and other places, where Zhejiang University insisted on running. In almost 7 years (1940 - 1946), Zhejiang University, which was led by Principal Zhu Kezhen at that time, had overcome some difficulties, including shortage of materials and hard political environment, to settle down and develop in the districts of Zunyi and Meitan, which were western backward districts. The reasons of Zhejiang University's success could be concluded as the following: the personality charm and right leadership of Principle Zhu Kezhen; teachers and students' adherence to Zhejiang University's motto of Qiushi (seeking truth) and their promotion of the spirit of Qiushi; promotion of development of local society and economy by combining teaching and research with practice and favorable humanistic environment and local people's support in the regions of Zunyi and Meitan. Summing-up on reasons of Zhejiang University's success does have its great enlightenment to improving the construction of spiritual civilization and establishing people-satisfied universities in China. The enlightenment of Zhejiang University's success includes: running a university needs some kind of spirit; success of a university lies in offering service to the society and leading social trend; every one of the teachers and students of the university should hold on the willingness to live a simple and virtuous life, be optimistic and adhere to his (her) career and responsibility.
