This paper explores the story from three perspectives of verbal irony, situational irony and structural irony, and reveals O＇ Connor＇ s discerning thoughts on life, reality and religion through the artistic use of irony. Thus, the study of the artistic device employed in the story will help understand better the authoress＇ literary creation.
