The present paper is a review of the history of Western translation studies from the perspective of philosophy. Probing into the metaphysical essence of traditional Western translation theories, it proves the inevitable deconstruction of the latter in the postmodern context. One of the outcomes of the deconstruction, it argues, is the unprecedented emancipation of the translator, who, having been subject to various external powers in the history, finds him/herself equal with and even superior to the original author and/or ST. This development of Western translation studies is attributed to the evolution of Western philosophical theories in the last century.
