Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is closely associated with the occurrence of hepatitis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. As HCV naturally infects only humans and higher primates, few animal models of HCV infection have been established. As a result, limited knowledge on the pathophysiology of and host immune responses to HCV infection is obtained.Gene transfer approaches have been used to establish relevant animal models to investigate the molecular basis of HCV-induced liver diseases. This paper focuses on providing an overview of the recent advances in understanding the role of HCV proteins in the pathogenesis of HCVinduced liver diseases in animal models.
