Research methodology used in studies on reading processes consists of, among others, the chronometrical experimental methods, verbal protocol and miscue analysis. These methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. A comparison of these relevant methods from the perspectives of theoretical basis, research focus and ecological validity helps teachers and researchers understand better the possible trends in studies on reading processes. More importantly, an adequate awareness of research methods will help to develop sensible views on research findings and make more sound judgments in reading instructions.
