[Objective]To explore the clinical effect of small incision reduction and external fixation combined with discontinuous stress compression for the treatment of distal tibia fractures. [Methods]A total of 56 cases of lower tibia fractures were fixed by external fixators through a small incision combined with discontinuous stress compression in our hospital from the July 2004 to the July 2009. The ratio of male to female patients was 39:17, and the mean age of the patients was 36 years(6~70 years old). Postoperatively, the fractures were stressed discontinuously and given functional training. When X-ray radiographs showed the union of fractures, the external fixators were removed. [Results]The average follow-up was 9 months(6~12 months). All of the patients obtained fracture union defined by clinical criteria in 2 to 8 months(averaged 4 months). Activi ties of knees and ankles were unaffected. [Conclusion]Reduction through a small incision combined with external fixation and discontinuous stress compression for the treatment of lower tibia fractures is minimally invasive and has satisfactory effect with a good functional recovery of knees and ankles.
