The Sources of Legend of Wushan Goddess and Its Cultural Interpretation

巫山神女故事的萌芽是"蘨草神话";而最早吟咏神女的诗歌是《山鬼》;宋玉所描绘的高唐神女事实是爱神与美神的化身;随着道教的发展,神女在道教系统里被称为云华夫人,是三峡神通广大的护佑神;而后来的望夫石则是神女故事的民间衍化;巫山神女文化自始至终沿着爱情与护佑两条密不可分的主线演变发展。

The cultural sources of the legend of Wushan Goddess are studied in details as follows:the legend originates from the myth of 'yaocao',and 'The Mountain Spirit' by Qu Yuan is the earliest text that presents the image of the goddess,while the legend of 'Gaotang Goddes's in Song Yu's verse turns out to be a fairy of love and beauty.Later,the image of the goddess is transformed to be 'Lady Yunhua' as the patron saint of the Three Gorges area.The story of 'Husband-gazing Stone' employs the deviated image of the goddess.Therefore,the image of the goddess actually has developed in the two interrelated themes of love and patronage.
