The Rock,a collection of choruses as one of the late masterpieces of T.S.Eliot,displays its unique value of innovation in both the theme and the artistic form. The choruses reflect the poet's spiritual beliefs that,on one hand, the transmigration of the universe and the soul is part of the natural law while the struggle between the good and the evil in the human world exists forever, and on the other hand, the human beings must have belief in God with pursuit of their spiritual self-sufficiency.This belief is presented in the 'duet' of hope and disappointment, which produces the thematic duality and endows the choruses with the uniqueness in artistic conception and performance.Hope and disappointment as two contrastive themes are combined to constitute the spiritual kernel of the collection of choruses.
