A comparative study of EFL learners’ linguistic complexity

摘要 本研究以英语学习者的口头和书面作文为数据,调查语言复杂性随语言水平和语体变化的模式。混合多元方差分析发现,语言水平和语体在词汇复杂性层面有显著的交互作用,但在句法复杂性层面没有显著的交互作用。语体对语言复杂性各层面的主效应大于语言水平。语体对句法复杂性和词汇复杂性的主效应分别达到中等程度和很大程度。语言水平和语体在词汇复杂性层面的交互作用主要体现在低、中等水平组和低、高水平组之间。语言复杂性各层面的发展呈现不平衡性。 This article investigates the changing patterns of linguistic complexity in the oral and written compositions by the EFL learners across language proficiency levels and registers.As a mixed MANOVA indicates,there is a significant interaction between language proficiency and register for lexical complexity,while no significant interaction is found for syntactic complexity. Register has a larger main effect on both lexical and syntactic complexity than language proficiency.The main effects of register on syntactic and lexical complexity are medium and large respectively.The interaction between language proficiency and register for lexical complexity is found mainly between the low and intermediate language proficiency groups on the one hand and between the low and high language proficiency groups on the other.Unparallel patterns are presented in the development of lexical and syntactic complexity.
