We measured the structure of three kinds of clay from different mineral resources to observe the changes in structure, surface area, pore volume and pore size distribution before and after acid-treating and ZnCl 2 supporting. The catalytic activity and selectivity for the reaction between benzene and benzyl chloride by the clay supported ZnCl 2 as caltalysts were measured. It was shown that the plane layers in clay were destroyed by acid-treating for several hours and the mesopore structure with size of 45nm was observed. The total amount of acid sites was increased apparently after ZnCl 2 supporting. Such kinds of clay supported ZnCl 2 have very good selectivity and relatively high activity for benzylation reaction of benzene, so they will be possible to the made into catalysts of replae AlCl 3 and hopefully be used widely.
