University social evaluation is an important component of higher education evaluation system,which can meet the mass societies＇ and stakeholders＇ needs for cognition of universities.At present,due to ignoring symbolic capital,many university rankings（the main forms of university social evaluation） have fallen into an erroneous zone of ＂numbers game＂.However,the symbolic capital plays a very important role in the university evaluation system,which is not only the basis of division of university social evaluation and university academic evaluation,but also the guarantee of legality and social credibility of the university social evaluation.It can more fairly evaluate the characteristic universities and universities of different sizes.Understanding of the important role,which symbolic capital plays in the university social evaluation,can help university rankings get out of the wrong direction to promote the development of university social evaluation.
