Discussion on Buddhism in Yingchuan prefecture in the Three Kingdoms,the Eastern and Western Jin Dynasties

三国两晋时期是佛教传入中土的初期阶段,当时的佛教活动中心北方主要集中在长安、洛阳,南方则在建康,而邻近洛阳的颍川郡(主要集中在郡治许昌)也有数位高僧的驻锡和游锡。高僧的佛教活动对颍川郡乃至中原的佛教发展产生了重要影响。但是两晋时期,许昌几易胡汉政权之手,政局不稳严重阻碍了高僧硕德在该地区传法弘教,故对此时的佛教活跃程度不宜估计过高。

The Three Kingdoms and the Eastern and Western Jin Dynasties was the initial stage in which Buddhism was introduced into China. Buddhist activity centers were Chang’an, Luoyang in the north and Jiankang in the south. There were several famous monks in Yingchuan prefecture （mainly in Xuchang）. Their Buddhist activities had great influence on Yingchuan prefecture and even the Central Plains. However, in the Eastern and Western Jin Dynasties the instable political situation resulted from Xuchang’s being ruled some times by minority nationalities severely hindered Buddhist activities. Therefore, the Buddhist activities in that period should not be overestimated.
