On the transformation of intellectuals’ role of enlighteners after the May 4th New Literary Movement

五四新文学作家以启蒙精神导师的姿态高声呐喊着登上了历史舞台,但在汹涌的革命浪潮的裹挟下,他们逐渐丧失了社会启蒙主体的身份。他们不再是作为现代意识的启蒙者而存在,而是作为现代革命意识的被启蒙者而存在。这种社会身份的转换,看似急剧偶然,实则有其必然的历史原因。

The writers in May 4th New Literary Movement came onto the stage of history with loud shouts as spiritual enlightners, but in the tempestuous revolutionary waves, they gradually lost their identity as leading social enghliteners. They no longer existed as the enlighteners of the modern consciousness, but as those to be enlightened about the moden revolutionary consciousness. The transformation of their social identity seems to be accidental, but has its historical inevitable reasons actually.
