Form and Meaning——A Stylistic Analysis of English Visual Poetry

从文体学的角度分析英语诗歌,我们会发现一类奇特的变异的诗歌形式,即视觉诗歌。视觉诗歌打破传统诗歌的书写规则,利用字母的大小写、空格、标点符号等书写格式方面的变异来强调主题意义,表达和抒发思想感情,或是利用诗行或诗节,组成图形,通过图形给读者以强烈的视觉刺激,结合语言所表达的意义,共同制造意象,打动读者。作为英语诗歌的一种类型,视觉诗歌反映了英美文化及审美观,并越来越多地引起读者与批评家的重视和研究兴趣。本文采用文体分析的理论和方法,总结分析视觉诗歌的不同类型,并对几首有代表性的视觉诗歌进行分析点评,从而透视视觉诗歌与众不同的表现力。

Analyzing English poetry from the stylistic point of view,we can find a special kind of deviated poetic form,i.e.the visual poems.Visual poetry breaks away form the graphological rules of the traditional poetry,using deviated forms of capitalization,spacing,and punctuations to highlight the themes and to express ideas or emotions,or to use the lines and stanzas of poems to form visual patterns in order to give visual stimulus to the readers.With the combination of the language and visual forms,the poets create images to impress the readers.As one type of English poetry,visual poetry reflects the Western culture and aesthetics and has aroused the interests of critics.This essay will use the theory and method of stylistics to analyze different types of visual poetry and comment on a few representative visual poems to show the powerful expressiveness of visual poetry.
