Edith Wharton（1862-1937） was one of the most important American female writers of the early 20th century.Most of her works are set in the old New York where Wharton was born and brought up.In the novel,Wharton has portaryed a fresh and unique old New York with her peculiar perspective and disclosed the moral crisis of the upper class produced by the impact of commoditity economy and the heavy price they paid for their conservatism and hypocrisy.This paper tries with the theory of Aristotelian Tragedy to analyze the main characters＇ tragic fate in The age of Innocence written by Edith Wharton.
