Objective To investigate the effects of preoperative nursing intervention on tolerance of catheter related bladder discomfort in the patients with neurological surgery during anesthesia recovery period and postoperative period. Methods A total of 95 cases were randomized into two groups:the intervention group and the control group. The intervention group patients received nursing intervention for urethral catheterization before 1 day of operation;the control group received traditional preoperative health education of catheterization. Two groups of patients were indwelled catheter with general anesthesia before surgery. After surgery, evaluation scores of indwelling catheter irritation tolerance during anesthesia recovery period and conscious period after anesthesia, the extent of catheter irritation of patients felt and cases of patients who pulled off catheter themselves accidently were all compared. Results There was no significant difference in evaluation scores of indwelling catheter irritation tolerance during anesthesia recovery period;but during conscious period after anesthesia, the scores of the intervention group was significantly lower than that of the control group. There was also no significant difference in the extent of catheter irritation of patients feeled and cases of patients who pulled off catheter themselves accidently between the two groups. Conclusions Preoperative nursing intervention of catheterization can help patients to confront catheter related bladder discomfort and to improve tolerance during conscious period after anesthesia.
