This paper presents a detailed introduction of a cross-linguistic model for comparing word class systems as put forward by K. Hengeveld and his colleagues with the University of Amsterdam, ranging from its functionalist perspective, the division of languages into differentiated, flexible, and rigid types, the implicational relations among different word classes, and the impact of the model on the study of morphological and word order typologies. The final part provides a brief critical review of this model.
