＂The Legend of Goddess＂ （Niangniang ci） is the most popular daci in Wenzhou guci （drum ballad）. It is still widely performed in Wenzhou, particuIarly in sacrificial rituals in rural areas. The ballad tells the story of a goddess, Lady Chen Shisi, who fights and defeats a spirit white snake. Its performance is ritual like, with fixed procedures, containing contents of local cult and culture. ＂The Legend of Goddess＂ is a representative masterpiece of Wenzhou guci that serves as a major vehicle of local goddess cult, and provides valuable clues in social history, folk religions and aesthetics.
