The Relationship Between Rhetoric and Sincerity:A Western Perspective

"修辞立其诚"这一命题对中国修辞学界产生了深远的影响。中国修辞学界对"修辞"与"诚"关系的主流解读是"诚"是"修辞"的前提和基础,"修辞"必须从"诚"出发,不能妄加修饰,要求修辞必须出于真诚。然而,在修辞实践中,建立在"诚"基础上的"修辞"并不一定奏效。本文从西方修辞的视角对"修辞"与"诚"之间的关系进行重新解读,以期为中国修辞研究提供一个新的视角。

The proposition that rhetoric ought to be based on sincerity has a profound impact on the Chinese tradition of rhetoric.As far as the Chinese rhetorical circle is concerned,sincerity should be the precondition for and the basis of all rhetorical activities.However,in practice,sincerity-based rhetoric may not work.In the hope of providing a new angle for rhetorical studies in China,this paper attempts to reinterpret the relationship between rhetoric and sincerity from the perspective of the Western rhetoric.
