老年糖尿病患者，多有生理机能减退，肾功能低下，磺脲类降糖药物易在体内蓄积，且胰岛素拮抗激素分泌反应障碍，容易发生低血糖，长时间低血糖昏迷可造成病人大脑细胞不可逆的损害，发生低血糖脑病，甚至危及生命。所以，正确指导病人用药，定期复查血糖及尿糖，合理应用口服降糖药物，及时调整剂量以防止低血糖昏迷是至关重要的。
