Abstract This paper presents stress analysis of a saddle support of a large horizontal storage tank for storing liquified carbon dioxide.It is found that for a multi-rib saddle support,the compressive stress on the outside rib is much larger than that on other ribs and web plate.When the ratio A/L of the extended length A over the total cylinder length L is in the range of 0 19~0 21,the stress distribution in the suport is more reasonable.A reinforced ring on the cylinder in the support area can not only greatly reduce the“collapse”and stresses in the cylindrical shell near the support,but also,in some extent,improve the stress distribution of the support.Comparisons between conventional calculation and finite element evaluation for some stresses are also availabel in this paper.
