孝文帝为在北魏推行门阀制度,在一以贯之的门阀观念下采取了一系列措施,光极堂大选即是其中非常重要的一环。它是孝文帝为重新配备迁洛以后的官员和确定他们的官位而进行的重大政治活动。而其前提"宣示品令",则是以门品定官品出身之令,它反映了孝文帝以官品定门第、以门第定出身、以出身定清浊、以清浊定阶级这样的理念。
