The defining of the Singapore's identity is an interaction process in the development of ASEAN. At the initial stage, Singapore worried about the ASEAN to be a tool of Indonesia's hegemony in the region, and the threat of independence and survival, if it participated in the political affairs too much. Therefore, Singapore basically acted as a prudent participant during this period. After the relationship within the ASEAN was stable and the politic and economic cooperation was on the right track, Singapore started to renew its identity in ASEAN, namely served as leader to handle in a low-key way.
