In 1986, Prof. Jacques Gauthier from Yale University first applied cladistic systimaties to the analysis of the relationships between birds and other species in archosauria, a basal reptilian group that includes dinosaurs, pterosaurs, crocodilias and some other extinct reptilians. His analysis further confirmed that birds might have originated from a branch of small theropods close to Deinonychosauria.
