AIM: To investigate the effect of moderate to severe periodontitis on vascular endothelial function. METHODS: We assessed flow mediated dilation and nitroglycerin mediated dilation of the brachial artery using vascular ultrasound in 36 subjects with moderate to severe periodontitis and 30 control subjects. The groups were matched for age and sex. Patients with hypercholesterolemia, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and history of cigarette smoking were excluded from the study. RESULTS: As compared with that in the control group, flow mediated brachial artery dilation in periodontitis group was significantly decreased (6. 91 _+ 3. 12 )% in periodontitis group versus (13.66 -+ 5.01 )% in control group( P 〈 0.05 ). However there was no significant difference in nitroglycerin mediated brachial artery dilation between two groups ( 16.55 ± 8.63 ) % in periodontitis group versus ( 17.26 ± 8.81 ) % in the control group (P 〉 0.05). CONCLUSION : Periodontal infection can affect vascular endothelial function and may increase the risk of coronary heart disease.
