Wang Meng's The Divine Bird is a profound fable on modern art, which relates fantastically and symbolically the internal absurdity of modern civilization—the paradox of needing and persecuting "the divine bird" simultaneously. "The divine bird" is a metaphor for the "holiness" of art as well as the "inspiration" of talent, while the combination of the death of artists with that of the divine bird symbolizes the depravity of modern art stemming from the blockage of technology-orientedness and utilitarianism, and embodies the "anguish" of modern art caused by the concealment of its genuine life and the subsequent separation of the soul from the body. Meng Di's pursuit of "the divine bird" is virtually a pursuit of the sacredness of art. Meanwhile, death means resurrection in that the death of "the divine bird" has touched off the resurrection of artists indulged in secular odes whereas the death of artists has sparked the rejuvenation of the art spirit overshadowed by secular life.
