Race has become one of the key terms in cultural criticism. The ethnic diversity in American society constitutes the complicated racial problem, which draws the attention of the academic circle. The paper starts with a discussion of the background of American racial problems and traces the history of the concept of ＂race＂ in the Western academic perspective on the basis of the analysis of the implications of race. Then, the paper focuses on the discussion of Du Bois＇s racial concept of ＂double consciousness＂ which includes integrationist thought and nationalist thought, and aims to provide a better interpretation of American racial problems.
