On Mao Zonggang’s Theory of Narrative in His Review on Romance of the Three Kingdoms

毛宗冈是清初著名的小说评点家,相对于他前前后后的金圣叹、张竹坡、"脂砚斋"等人,毛宗冈更注重对长篇章回小说的叙事研究。因此,在毛宗冈评点的《三国演义》中,就留下了很多关于小说叙事方面的精当的言论,有的甚至还是毛氏独具慧眼的论断。这些,都是我们研究中国古代小说和小说批评时不可忽视的内容,有些言论,甚至是难能可贵的。

Mao Zonggang, as a famous fiction critic in the early Qing Dynasty, focuses more on the narrative devices of the fictions than other literary critics such as Jin Shengtan, Zhang Zhupo, 'Zhiyanzhai', etc in the earlier or later times. For example, in his criticism on Romance of the Three Kingdoms he makes many precise and proper remarks on the work’s narrative devices, some of which display his remarkable values and perspectives. This article holds that these valuable theoretical achievements should not be ignored in the study of classical Chinese fictions and their criticism.
