In academic spoken and written discourse,English native speakers are found to use much more hypotactic structures than Chinese native speakers of English. It is claimed that lack of hypotactic structures among other shortcomings in the nonnative speaker's spoken discourse results in lower comprehensibility because the native-speaker listener often looks for certain syntactic structuring cues to differentiate the relations among ideas. The pragmatic significance of using hypotactic structures provides a theoretical framework and rationale for the current exploratory study of syntactic features in Chinese-English interlanguage discourse. This comparative study attempts to explore acquisition patterns of syntactic structures in the spoken and written interlanguage discourse and their implications based on two sets of data collected. The quantitative findings of the targeted structures show that the spoken and written Chinese-English interlanguage discourses are distinctive in terms of frequency of the hypotactic structures and types and frequency of the connectives used, and are characteristic of spoken and written modes of language. It is suggested that L2 hypotactic structure use may be affected by L1 prototypical syntactic structures and L2 learning environment.
