The English poet Philip Larkin is deeply absorbed in the theme of death. His style is bound up with his recurring theme of death and fatalism, as in his major poems "Why Did I Dream of You Last Night?", "Ambulances", "Sad Steps", "The Building", "Next, Please", "An Arundel Tomb", "The Mower", "The Trees", and "Continuing to Live" etc. A thorough study of these poems through the New Criticism approach finds that they are characterized by combining the death theme with "commonplace experiences" which are narrated in an ordinary, colloquial style. The strange mixture of lyricism and discontent in these poems is full of tension.
