Translational ethics of commitment, put forth by Andrew Chesterman in the form of Hieronymic Oath aims to deal with the incompatibility between the ethics of representation, of service, of communication and norm--based ethics. However, it fails to fulfill its task because the commitment this model advocates is unidirectional, but the commitment in the practice of translation should be bidirectional. While the translator makes commitments to the original writer, the client and the target readers, these agents who are closely tied to the translator's work should make their respective commitments to the translator. This is of vital importance to the translator to function as an efficient mediator when the conflicts between these agents occur.
