Against the backdrop of new financial regulations recently approved in the United States, Chinese lawmakers are pondering their own financial oversight adjustments. Wu Xiaoling, deputy chairwoman of the Financial and Economic Committee of the National People's Congress, is promoting equal treatment for private and state investments.A former deputy governor at the People's Bank of China, she opposes squeezing out the private sector in good times while encouraging private investment during a credit crunch. Wu also want to prioritize economic restructuring, putting energy efficiency and environment near the top. Wu said future financial regulations should center on checks and balances for regulatory bodies, including the central bank, and guarding against systemic risk in the financial sector. Moreover, she said, China should move quickly to adjust regulations following recent delays linked to the global financial crisis.
