Objective To validate the 15-item gelotophobia scale for using in China, which is the first empirical study on gelotophobia in China. Methods The Chinese version of the 15-item Gelotophobia Scale was administered to 429 university students(180 males and 249 females) in the first time of data collection. The Chinese version of the 15-item Gelotophobia Scale and the 9-item Life Satisfaction Scale were administered to 352 university students(88 males and 264 females) in the second time of data collection. Results The Chinese version of the 15-item Gelotophobia Scale had acceptable psychometric properties(Cronbach alpha=0.82) and its unidimensional structure was generally supported.Gelotophobia was not related to the age or gender of the participants. However,it was significantly and negatively related to life satisfaction(r=-0.29,P0.01).More than 11.65% of the participants exceeded a cut-off score indicating at least a slight expression of gelotophobic symptoms. Conclusion Gelotophobia scale is effective to chinaren.
