Long Day＇s Journey into Night is O＇Neill＇s posthumous work.The traumatized Tyrone family members are always complaining,quarrelling and regretting.They cannot forget the past and use it to protect themselves from the cruel realities,choosing escapism as a solution which decides that their journey can only be a journey from hope to despair.In addition,the symbols in the play are playing an important role in expressing the themes,exposing the contradictory and hesitating mental conditions of the characters.The playwright makes inquiries on life and fate via this play.After sixty years,modern people may still learn a lot from it——to fight with fate and life positively to survive.
