A Review of the Number of Successful Candidates in the Highest Imperial Examinations in Tongcheng during the Qing Dynasty

关于清代桐城进士的确切人数,历来文献记载不一。综合光绪《重修安徽通志》、道光《续修桐城县志》、《明清进士题名碑录索引》、《桐城耆旧传》、桐城部分家谱等资料,清代桐城地区文进士人数共有152名,比安庆府其他五县进士总和还多,科举成绩斐然。

As to the number of successful candidates in Tongcheng in the highest imperial examinations during the Qing Dynasty,records in different literature vary.Based on Revised Gazetteer of Anhui province in the years of Guangxu,Revised Gazetteer of the Tongcheng County in the years of Daoguang,The Index of the Block-printed Copy of the Inscribing of Successful Candidates in the Highest Imperial Examinations on the Stone of Ming and Qing Dynasties,Biography of Venerated People in Tongcheng,and some genealogies in Tongcheng,it is found that the number of successful candidates of Tongcheng in the highest imperial examinations during the Qing Dynasty is 152,more than the total number in other five counties of Anqing Prefecture,which showed the remarkable achievements in the highest imperial examinations.
