Interpretations of the Optimal Relevance of Chinese Puns——Taking A Dream in Red Mansions as an Example

"彼此双关"是发话人在特定语境下利用话语中指称语词所指对象的不确定性来实现其交际意图的一种独特的汉语双关。它的主要生成动因并非出于认知上的经济,而是为了表述的间接或委婉。"彼此双关"最佳关联期待的满足是由弱关联的第一显性解读和强关联的第二隐性解读联合完成的。

Within the framework of relevance theory,this paper attempts to make an exploration about the achievement of optimal relevance in the cognitive-pragmatic interpretations of Chinese puns by a case study in A Dream in Red Mansions.Punning is a type of unique Chinese puns,whose speakers communicate their intentions by taking advantage of the referents＇ indefiniteness of the referring expressions in utterances concerned.Indirectness or implicitness rather than cognitive economy is its primary production motive.The optimal relevance for punning is achieved from the combination of weak relevance in a first（overt） interpretation and strong relevance in a second（covert） interpretation.
