Objective To study the correlation between depression and family & social supports in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients so as to improve the patients' life quality. Methods A total of 107 PD patients with chronic renal failure were selected with convenience sampling method in a PD center and then were investigated using Hamilton depression scale(HAMD) and social support revalued scale(SSRS). Results Of all the involved PD patients, 14.2% of them were observed with slight to mild depression, 26.3% with moderate depression, and 12. 7% with severe depression. Significant differences were observed in social supports scores of patients with different levels of depression (F = 10. 50, P 〈 0. 05). The correlation coefficient(r) between depression and the total score of SSRS, subjective support, objective support and utilization of support was -0. 102, -0. 429, -0. 409, -0. 318 ,respectively. The correlation was of statistical significance (all P 〈 0. 05). Conclusion Depressive symptom is very common in peritoneal dialysis patients. So the awareness and health education on depression should be enhanced for PD patients and their families.
