1 Introduction In this talk I provide a contemporary overview of the field of language teacher education (LTE).Following brief comments on the global and varied scope of LTE and its relatively recent history as a field of inquiry,I examine in turn a number of central themes highlighted in current LTE literature.They are:(1) Teacher cognition; (2) The knowledge base for LTE;(3) Knowledge about language;(4) Reflective practice;(5)
