The 67-year old Etsuo Hattori,chief Japanese representative of Toyota in China,is respectfully known as'Grandfather'to most people within Toyota China.'Grandfather's'frank and candid style makes him far different from the typical stern and rigid stereotype of Japanese businessmen,as he won't hesitate to criticize his own company.He is sometimes said by the media to be Toyota China's'secret weapon',as if just by having him here guarantees Toyota's success in China.However,business execs who have met with him have started to ask:Is Etsuo Hattori's role at Toyota China being over-estimated by the media? Being born in China,he is said by some to be very'Chinese'.However,there are also those who say that he is more'Japanese'than most Japanese.
