Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is highly expressed in the liver and spleen, can be induced by many factors including certain virus infections. It plays an important protective role in the tissues by its antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic functions. The infection of Hepatitis C virus (HCV) can result in chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, hepatocarcinoma, which throws a great threat to human health. Many studies have discovered that HO-1 plays its beneficial role in the course of HCV infection through interfering viral replication, while HCV also can regulate HO-1 expression conversely. Although the molecular mechanism for HO-1 and HCV interaction is not clear completely so far, the correlative studies about HO-1 and HCV infection have made great progress, which will provide HCV infection a potential therapeutic approach. This text reviewed the correlative studies regarding HO-1 and HCV infection.
