English Connectives:Tradition and Reflection

英语连接词作为虚词,一直为学术界所忽视。然而,洞见语言本质和揭示语言功能的需要,促使我们反思英语连接词研究的传统。文章从连接词研究的起源、定义和分类三个维度出发,反思相关研究,在此基础上得出结论:对连接词的传统理解根据不足;连接词是语言整体论和话语建构的关键性因素之一,应该而且必须予以系统、细致研究。

As function words,English connectives have been ignored by academic circle.As a matter of fact,however,the necessity of gaining an insight into the nature of language and expounding the function of language urges us to reflect on the tradition of English connectives.From the dimensions of origin,definition and classification of connectives study,this paper reflects on relative studies and therefore comes to the conclusion：firstly,there is a lack of grounds of traditional understanding of connectives;secondly,connectives should and must be studied systematically and meticulously for the simple reason that it is a fundamental factor for language holism and discursive construction.
