Some common defects of municipal road excavation and restoration are summarized in the paper such as differential settlement, parallel crack, net crack, pavement holes & bumps. Then, the main mechanisms of these defects are discussed from several aspects including backfilling differential deformation, pavement stress and general strength. Finally, several countermeasures are provided by the author, such as avoiding backfilling gap, improving groove subgrade strength, excavating step style restoration structure from two sides, making pavement structure reinforcement and strengthening the connecting areas of the excavation and the trenchless.
