With an analysis
of the indexing process,the specific feature of concept descriptors and the origin and function of
the thesaurus,the paper indicates that the essence of the thesaurus is its control on indexing and
that increasing the capability and scope of the thesaurus's control on indexing will greatly improve
the effectiveness of the information retrieval system.Several examples and principles of
thesaurus optimization are given.\;
