英国文学是我国高等院校英语本科专业的一门专业必修课程。最新修订的《高等学校英语专业英语教学大纲》(2000)把它列为英语专业知识主干课程。新大纲明确规定:"文学课程的目的在于培养学生阅读、欣赏、理解英语语言文学原著的能力,掌握文学批评的基本知识和方法。通过阅读与分析英国文学作品,促进学生语言基本功的提高,增强学生对西方文学及文化的了解。"由此可见,学好该课程对提高学生的词汇量,拓宽学生的知识面,培养学生的文学欣赏能力、语言运用能力、阅读理解能力和跨文化交际能力具有非常重要的作用。

In China, British literature has been a major required course for bachelor＇s degree program in universities. According to the latest revision of English education syllabus for English major of university （2000）, British literature has been classified as a major course in English professional knowledge. The syllabus has also dearly said that the aim of the British literature is to train the students in the aspect of reading, appreciation, understanding of the English literature reading, and enable them to grasp the knowledge and the approach of literary criticism. Students could improve their basic language skills and enlarge the knowledge of western culture and literature through the reading and analysis of the British literature works. From the above, a good command of the course plays a quite crucial role in enlarging students＇ vocabulary, enriehing their knowledge as well as cultivating their capability of appreciating literature works, using English, reading and even intercultural communication.
