严复是中国历史上第一个真正全面了解西方思想文化的思想家,也是中国近代史上第一个全面系统宣传介绍西方资产阶级政治、思想和文化的启蒙思想家。他在引介西学过程中,通过翻译西学著作和撰写书评,对西方古典时期的思想文化进行了介绍,从而将古希腊罗马历史文化知识引入了中国。严复引介传播西方古典文化的工作,为维新变法和启蒙运动提供了思想文化武器,开阔了国人的视野,在一定程度上满足了国人了解外国历史的需求,也激发了青年人探寻世界知识和外国文化的热情。

Yan Fu is the first thinker who completely comprehend western culture and the enlightenment thinker who firstly introduces the western bourgeoisie knowledge on politics, thoughts and culture. Yan Fu introduces the western culture and history in Ancient Greece and Rome to China by translating western learning works into Chinese and writing book reviews. It provides strong ideological weapons for the Reform Movement of 1898, broadens Chinese horizons, meets Chinese demands for learning about foreign history and arouses Chinese youths＇ enthusiasm to seek world knowledge and foreign culture.
