Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and luteinizing hormone (LH) are two members of the glycoprotein hormone family and both of them share a common receptor-LH/hCG receptor. The expression of the LH/hCG receptors is regulated by many factors including estrogen and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). LH plays an important role in "two cells two gonadotropins" theory. LH induces local production of soluble molecules such as IGF throughout folliculogenesis, hCG has similar activity to LH. Some researchers added hCG with FSH in the mid-late follicular phase in controlled ovaries hyperstimulation (COH). The pregnancy rate was not significantly different in hCG addition group, but the gonadotropin dose was reduced significantly, which can be a good saving for the patients. Some scholars even thought that hCG can replace FSH in the late follicular phase in COH.
